In the New Testament a man named Zacchaeus had a surprise dinner guest. One day, as Jesus was walking by and the crowds gathered around, Zacchaeus climbed a tree to get a better view. He presumed Jesus would just pass him by, but Jesus had so much more planned for Zacchaeus.
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. (Luke 19:1-6)
Everyone standing around was not impressed with Jesus. It miffed them that he would go to the house of a tax collector who stole from his own people. But as many of us can testify, an encounter with Jesus changes our lives forever. And it is the same for Zacchaeus.
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:8-10)
So much of Jesus’ life centred around meals and meeting together with people. I am sure we can all recall meals spent with friends and family and the fun times we have had. At BPCC we, too, have the chance to share a meal together. Let me invite you to our upcoming event — ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?’ — happening on Saturday August 20th at 6pm. You can choose to host people for dinner at your house or you and your family can choose to be a guest in someone else’s home. Sharing a meal together is one of the best ways to make some new friends or reconnect with old ones!
Get in quick because registration closes at 3pm on Monday 15th August 2016!
