Hi Church. I’m really excited about the current AM series “Healthy Homes”. When the idea was first put forward in a meeting, I immediately started thinking about whether Kidz Church could go along with something similar. Then I started looking in the Bible for good examples of family life and strong parenting. Hmmm, let’s see. I didn’t have to get far before I discovered that the Bible is actually full of stories of imperfect humans making poor decisions and seemingly getting the whole ‘family life’ thing wrong. There’s murder, incest, cheating, lying, adultery….the list goes on. Perhaps you find these Biblical stories disappointing. Or perhaps, like me, you find them encouraging.
You see, we live as fallen people, in a fallen world. God has given us free will and unfortunately with that comes bad choices and selfish attitudes. But family is an integral area of our life that God desperately wants to bless. He wants families to succeed. He wants stories of His faithfulness, His never ending love, His forgiveness to be passed down from generation to generation. He wants to (and will) use our weakness to show His strength, His power and love to His people.
Reggie Joyner in his book ‘Think Orange’ says “Never buy into the myth that you need to become the ‘right’ kind of parent before God can use you in your children’s lives. Instead learn to cooperate with whatever God desires to do in your heart today so your children will have a front row seat to the grace and goodness of God.”
Can I encourage us all by saying that it is not our job as parents to impress our children or anyone else with our ability to parent (thank goodness!) It is, however our role to impress upon our children the love and character of God, in everything we do. Is that easy? No. But we have the Holy Spirit equipping and interceding. And is it worth it? Absolutely!
At Kidz Church we aim to send home a Family page each Sunday this term, outlining briefly what we’ve done that week, and some suggested activities you could do at home. Feel free to use this resource in a way that best suits your family. The Kidz Church team are praying that we can partner together with you as parents, as “we tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord.”
See you Sunday.
