I read the children’s book ‘The Very Cranky Bear’ to my kids recently. It is a simple story of a ‘plain but thoughtful sheep’ who figures out that the cranky bear, who features in the story, just wants to sleep. The sheep looks past herself and her partialities to recognize the needs of the bear. Why on earth am I sharing this with you? Like it did with my children, it provides an opportunity to talk about being humble and putting the needs of others before my own.
We read about Christ’s example of humility in Philippians. ‘So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being in the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.’ (Phil 2:1-4).
A core value of our church, BPCC, is to love one another and serve like Jesus. This means putting the needs of others before our OWN and to use the resources that God has entrusted to us for the good of His people, our community and our world!
The challenge I have for us is to, proactively, ‘love another’ in the next week. Send an encouraging letter, sponsor a child, contribute to Operation Christmas Child, buy a gift card for someone in need, buy groceries for BPCC Compassion Cupboard, make a meal for a busy family, visit someone who would appreciate the company, the list is endless.
‘… let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven’. (Matt 5:16b)
